AC-3 - The 5.1-channel compressed digital sound system specified for DTV broadcasting in Canada. AC-3 delivers CD-quality digital audio and provides five full-bandwidth channels for front left, front right, center, surround left and surround right speakers, plus an LFE (low frequency effect) subwoofer, for a total of 5.1 channels. AC-3 is one member of a family of sound systems developed by Dolby Labs.
PVP-OPM - Protected Video Path Output Protection Management. Downgrades computer video resolution or blocks the picture entirely if the connected display doesn't support content protection.
8VSB modulation technique - (8-level vestigial sideband) - DTV stations in the U.S. use 8VSB modulation. This is an AM mode wherein the carrier is multiplied by an 8-level digital signal, and then a filter is used to remove all but the carrier and 6 MHz of the upper sideband. ("8VSB" is often used as a synonym for OTA.)
EDTV - This acronym stands for "Enhanced Definition Television." It refers to a complete products/system with at least a digital receiver display scanning format, and Dolby Surround Sound audio output capabilities.
Resolution - A measure of the density of lines and dots per line which make up a visual image. Usually, the higher the numbers, the sharper and more detailed the picture will be. In terms of DTV, maximum resolution refers to the number of horizontal scanning lines multiplied by the total number of pixels per line.
OAR - (original aspect ratio) - Also called Letterbox format, OAR means that none of the image is clipped or squeezed. Unused parts of the screen are usually black.
DLP - (digital light processor). A technology for video projection, also call DMD (Digital Micro-mirror Device). It is a large chip with about a million tiny mirrors on its surface. The chip can tilt each mirror to vary the amount of light reflected off of it.
