Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2005-02-09 Summary: Great HD TV for the price ... The previous review is accurate but a bit unfair. For broadcasts which are offered in high definition, the color and clarity of image produced is spectacular. Some people who have seen programs on this set assume it's a plasma and are surprised to hear that it's not. Some have even said certain programs appear to have a ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2005-08-19 Summary: We are pleased with the 60" Sony Grand Wega/ LCD HDTV ... I ordered our set brand new on-line with ElectronicsExpo in NJ on July 6th, 2005 for $2327.77. Delivery was $150 to my door. CC, Sears, and BB all were selling the same set for between $3,599 and $3,699. The Sony was delivered and carried in on on 7/14/05. We could have had it a few days earlier but this was the only day that worked for me. The set arrived in perfect shape. We are very pleased with the image. Keep in mind these sets come preset with a way too bright display. These are deliberately set too bright so ...more

Did you know the following facts about HDTV?

Progressive scan - This is the opposite of interlaced scan.

Video-on-Demand (VOD) - A programming library service offering the individual viewer the choice of the available content on demand. When the program is requested and confirmed (by telephone or Internet) it is then delivered to the viewer over an available channel in encrypted form. VOD services are generally arranged on a "Pay per View" basis, analogous to the cinema.

4DTV - This is a DTV subscription service for C-band and Ku-band (a satellite service requiring an 8 foot dish).

Multipoint convergence - Projection TVs with 3 CRTs require periodic adjustment to keep the 3 images perfectly aligned. Typically this is a simple 5 minute procedure the consumer must do every month or so.

Plasma Displays (PDP). A technique that builds an image from a large number of pixels formed in a glass panel. The pixels are individually controlled, yielding a picture free of flicker and of high brightness. Displays of excellent resolution and color are available and the display approaches the "television picture on the wall" ideal. PDP displays up to 160 cm (63in.) are available, making them suitable for the home theatre.

Luminance - Component of the video signal that represents the brightness of the image.

Fps - Frames per Second. To give the illusion of motion, television actually transmits a series of snapshot pictures referred to as frames. Increasing the frame rate improves motion smoothness and may reduce flicker in some displays. In Canada both analog and digital television transmits 30 Fps.

8-VSB - Acronym for the transmission method used for over-the-air DTV broadcasting in Canada and the USA. Eight discreet amplitude level, "vestigial side-band" broadcast transmission technology. VSB is an analog modulation technique used to reduce the amount of spectrum needed to transmit information through cable TV, or terrestrial broadcasting.

Widescreen - see 16 - 9

Comb filter - A circuit in NTSC sets that separates the color information from the brightness information.

Dolby Pro Logic Surround. This is a 4-channel analog system. During recording, the 4 channels are "folded" into 2 stereo channels. If played back without a Pro Logic decoder, it sounds like normal stereo. This format is becoming obsolete.

IEEE 1394 - Also called Firewire or iLink. Originally a serial bus for PCs, 1394 may or may not become the interconnection standard for DTV products. It is competing with DVI. IEEE 1394 is a spec for a hardware interconnect plus a software shell. But additional software, such as HAVi, is required for connected units to actually talk to each other. Some day 1394 may dramatically simplify the way DTV products interconnect.

PAL - (Phase Altering Line standard) - This alternative to NTSC has 625 lines, interlaced, 50 fields per second. It is used in most of Europe, Asia (except USSR), Africa, and Australia, and parts of South America.

Virtual channel number - This is the channel the consumer thinks he is watching. The actual (physical) channel is selected by a hidden mechanism.
